Fingertips Demo 3: Exploring Extended & Altered Chords

This page expands on the 4 guided chord steps from this demo Path.

You can return to this page at any time via the link which is at the bottom of the 4th Step page.

This demo introduces some of the richer sounds possible with extended and altered chords.

Unlike most Fingertips Paths, which usually focus on a complete practice song, this demo explores how the same small group of chords can create very different moods, colours and musical movement.

Exploring the Sound of the Progression

Sunday Morning — Song Example

The smooth Dm9 → G13 → Cmaj9 movement used throughout this Path can also be heard in Sunday Morning by Maroon 5, helping create the song’s warm and soulful atmosphere. The added C♯dim7 chord used here extends the progression further, adding extra tension and movement before resolving naturally back to the beginning. A similar turnaround feeling can briefly be heard later in the song, at the end of the short instrumental section and leading back to the vocals,  around the  2:20 timestamp, depending on the recording.

Practice notes

  • Focus on keeping the transitions between chords smooth and relaxed, allowing the progression to flow naturally without rushing the changes.

  • Use the sustain pedal carefully to help connect the harmonies, but avoid holding it too long as rich extended chords can easily become muddy.

  • Try repeating the same chord while gradually ascending or descending the keyboard using alternating hands. This can create a wide, expressive sound with surprisingly simple movements.

This technique works especially well with diminished 7 chords, as the spacing between the notes always remains the same when moved up or down the keyboard, and once mastered is a great way to easily add sparkle and richness to your playing.
