Fats Waller
Stride piano was the heartbeat of early jazz, and no one embodied its joy better than Fats Waller. His left hand leapt across the keyboard, alternating deep bass notes with chords that created a steady “oom-pah” rhythm, while his right hand danced with playful syncopations. Stride is both fun and challenging: the wide jumps demand accuracy, and the rhythm must stay rock solid.
